Caroline Achaintre, Dissolver, Dortmund Kunstverein, Sept 21 – Nov 18 2018
In her carpets, ceramics and watercolors, Caroline Achaintre finds her inspiration from a wealth of images whose origins can be found in postmodern design, art history, high and pop culture, as well as all kinds of album covers and masks. Her large-format carpets, which are made with the technique of tufting, as well as her ceramics represent faces, animals, body parts, garments or everyday objects. Frequently, colors, shapes and contours merge, giving the work something mysterious and chimerical. The small-format watercolors often find themselves in a similar limbo; they contract and expand at the same time.
The choice of materials, the way they are processed and the contrasting colors turn her works into sensual objects. They seduce you to be touched, stroked or even to immerse yourselves completely in them. For her first institutional solo exhibition in Germany, Achaintre presents a series of new psychedelically appearing works.
