Inspired by Claes Oldenburg’s 1962 statement questioning the boundaries between theater and visual arts, the exhibition highlights how objects are not just displayed but also staged and performed.

At its center are works from Oldenburg’s The Store (1961–62), where he created and sold replicas of everyday goods, setting the tone for broader reflections on presentation and circulation. The exhibition also features archival materials from the Claes Oldenburg and Coosje van Bruggen papers, loaned by the Getty Research Institute.

In addition to iconic works, Fictions of Display includes new acquisitions and never-before-shown pieces, such as a painting by avant-garde theater director Tadeusz Kantor and a video installation by Catherine Sullivan that blends theater, film, and visual art. A live performance by Tania Pérez Córdova subtly integrates a human presence into the gallery space, as a performer quietly walks among visitors, mirroring an object on display.

Featured artists: Eleanor Antin, ASCO, Ana Barrado, Math Bass, Joseph Beuys, Mark Bradford, Brassaï, Nancy Brooks Brody, Colette, Fiona Connor, Tania Pérez Córdova, Guy de Cointet, Raúl De Nieves, Lukas Duwenhögger, Thomas Eggerer, Victor Estrada, VALIE EXPORT, Ali Eyal, Peter Fischli, Dan Flavin, Robert Gober, Guillermo Gómez-Peña, Félix González-Torres, Joe Goode, Dan Graham, Yaron Michael Hakim, Lyle Ashton Harris, Evan Holloway, Christian Holstad, Rebecca Horn, Roni Horn, Donald Judd, Brian Jungen, Tadeusz Kantor, Mike Kelley, Toba Khedoori, Martin Kippenberger, Terence Koh, Louise Lawler, An-My Lê, William Leavitt, Charles LeDray, Nikki S.
